EXPO’10 Shanghai

Über die Sommermonate 2010 ergriff ich zum ersten Mal die Möglichkeit nach China zu reisen. Ein Freund, der damals auf der Weltausstellung in Shanghai arbeitete, lud mich ein ihn zu besuchen. Es sollte die erste einer Vielzahl von Reisen in dieses damals noch fremde Land sein. Zudem war es auch die erste größere Forschungsreise, die ich privat unternahm. Da das Studium der KSA gewissermaßen dazu aufrief empirische Feldforschung in unvertrauten Gefilden zu unternehmen, tat ich dies auch und forschte über die Dauer meines Aufenthaltes zur praktischen Umsetzung des EXPO-Mottos “better city better life”; vornehmlich am Gelände der Weltausstellung, aber auch in anderen Teilen Shanghais. Meine Ergebnisse präsentierte ich anschließend in meiner Bachelorarbeit, die sich Fragen der Lebensqualität in Wien und Shanghai stellte.
Betreut wurde diese Arbeit von Dr. Davis-Sulikowski, vom Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie. Ich möchte mich recht herzliche bei Ihr, aber auch meinem Freund Simon V.K. bedanken, der mich zum ersten Mal nach China einlud.

In between the summer months of 2010, I took the chance to travel to China for the first time in my life. As a friend of mine, who was working at the World Expo in Shanghai, had invited me to visit him there. It should be the first of many stays in the country. In addition, it also would be the first major fieldwork trip of mine. Since the study of Social Anthropology had always called for empirical field research in yet unfamiliar surroundings, I seized the opportunity and conducted ethnographic research for the duration of my stay and mainly on site of the EXPO 2010, concerning myself with the practical implementation of the EXPO motto “better city better life” within the city itself; primarily on the grounds of the World’s Fair, but also in other parts of Shanghai. I later on presented my results within a Bachelor-Thesis, which finally figured to become a multisited ethnography on the “quality of life within a metropolis”, comparing Vienna and Shanghai in this regard.
The thesis was supervised by Dr. Davis-Sulikowski from the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, of the University Vienna. My thanks hereby go to her but also to my dear friend Simon, who had invited me to China, not only on this occasion but several others since then.
